Each piece starts with different colours of loose fluffy roving from various types of sheep. They are layered and placed to create an image and wet down and rubbed to encourage the wool to knit together. It’s a constant balance between manipulating the wool where you want it, and letting the wool felt where it wants to be. After agitating, rolling and turning the wool many, many times, it is ready to embellish using barbed needles known as needle felting. I often then incorporate beads or coloured threads into the piece. I enjoy the tactile nature of the wool and the unique 3-dimensional scenes that can be created when the wool felts together.
